BGB deployed for Khulna City polls

The Khulna City Corporation (KCC) election is set to take place on Monday (June 12, 2023), and the Election Commission (EC) has finished all preparations.

All election materials were scheduled to be distributed from the city‍‍`s Divisional Mohila Krira Complex at 11 am.

Electronic voting machines (EVMs) will be used to conduct the KCC polling, according to Returning Officer Md Alauddin.

He said, there will be 39 candidates running for reserved seats, 136 running for councillor seats across 31 wards, and 5 running for mayoral chair.

He added that voting will begin at 8 am and last nonstop until 4 pm. He claimed that two councillor for wards 13 and 24 had been chosen uncontested.

As many as 11 platoons of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) were sent out to maintain security in the KCC poll, according to Khandaker Yasir Arefin, the deputy commissioner (DC) of Khulna, and they have been patrolling since this morning.   

According to the DC, each platoon of 20 BGB men will help 11 executive judges in running mobile court. 

Electoral campaigning began on May 26 with the distribution of electoral symbols. The campaign ended on Saturday midnight as per EC directive. Throughout the election campaign, the entire city has been sporting a joyful appearance.

In the 31 wards of Khulna City, a total of 5,35,528 persons are eligible to vote, and there are 1,732 voting booths under 289 polling stations.
