US announces $5m reward for information on Avijit murder fugitives

Reward of up to $5 million has been set by the US government for anyone who can provide information on two fugitive convicts in the 2015 murder of writer-blogger Avijit Roy.

The absconding convicts are sacked army major Syed Ziaul Haque alias Major Zia and Akram Hossain alias Abir.

On Monday (December 20), the US Department of State announced the reward under its Rewards for Justice platform.

US-based Bangladeshi secularist writer-blogger Avijit was hacked to death in public by Islamist militants on February 26, 2015. On that day, he and his wife (Rafida Ahmed Bonya) were on the Ekushey Book Fair premises when the miscreants fatally attacked. He succumbed to his injuries while his wife sustained critical injuries.

The Rewards for Justice Programme tweeted on its social media handle: “If you have info on those responsible for this heinous attack, text us at the number (+1-202-702-7843) below.

“Those responsible for the attack are believed to be in Bangladesh,” the US State authorities added in the statement.
