Three killed as UP polls clashes erupt in Chandpur, Bogra

Two people were killed Chandpur on Wednesday in clashes during the fifth phase of union parishad elections at the Haimchar and Kachua upazilas. 

Meanwhile, a man was stabbed to death in a clash between the supporters of two member candidates during the election to Rameswarpur Union Parishad in Bogra’s Gabtoli upazila on Wednesday.

Chandpur’s Superintendent of Police Md Milon Mahmud confirmed the deaths in the evening, according to media reports.

The brawls took place between 3pm and 3:30pm.

In Kachua, Sharif Hosain was stabbed during the clash between two member candidates at a polling centre at Sachar union in the afternoon. He died on the way to a hospital in Dhaka.

Kachua police OC Md Mohiuddin said he heard that rival candidate supporters attacked Sharif after accusing him of casting fake votes.

In Haimchar, another man was also stabbed to death during another clash between two chairman candidates in Baherchar area of Nilkamal union at around 3pm.

The man, whose body was found half a kilometre away from a polling centre, could not identified instantly, said Haimchar police OC Mahbub Molla.

Clashes in Bogra 

The deceased in the district was identified as Zakir Hossain, 32. 

The clashes took place outside the Jaigai High School centre in Rameswarpur union, said Gabtali police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Zia Latiful Islam.

At around 1:30pm, a clash broke out between the supporters of member candidate Saidul Islam and Ferdous Hossain Mithu outside the polling centre. 

At one point, Saidul Islam's supporter Zakir Hossain Zakir was stabbed. 

He was taken to Bogra Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in a critical condition where the duty doctors declared him dead, Sub Inspector (SI) Shamim Hossain of Chhilimpur Medical Outpost in Bogra confirmed.

Wednesday saw another two deaths-- one each in Chattogram and Manikganj-- during the voting hours.

A 38-year-old man was killed in Anwara upazila of Chattogram, while a quinquagenarian woman died Doulatpur in Manikganj.
