Three killed in polling violence

At least three people have been shot dead at different parts of the country during the fourth phase of Union Parishad (UP) election while at least 53 were injured.

The deceased were identified as Abdus Salam of Sylhet, Abdul Khalek in Patuakhali and Hamidul Islam of Thakurgaon.

However, the Election Commission (EC) claimed that the election was held peacefully except some separate incidents.

EC secretary Md. Humayun Kabir Khodoker said, fair polls held at 836 UPs in the fourth phase. Claiming huge voter turnout he said, the election was held peacefully.

“Voting at 15 polling centres was postponed as the situation went beyond control of the presiding officer,” added he.

In Golapganj of Sylhet, villagers locked clashes with law enforcers while the vote counting was underway. The clash left Abdus Salam, a cycle mechanic, dead and injured dozens including 8/10 police personnel.

Golapganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mohammed Golam Kabir said, “One person was shot dead. However, who gunned him down is yet to be confirmed.”

Abdul Khaled, supporter of a member aspirant, was also shot dead at Rangabali upazila of Patuakhali while the votes were being counted.

Asked on Rangabali UNO Moniruzzaman Sohag said, “I heard about some chaos in the area. But, I don’t know whether anyone is shot or not. Try to learn in any other way. We are busy in declaring the result.”

Earlier, another person, Hamidul Islam, was shot dead by law enforcers in Thakurgaon Sadar upazila.

Officer in Charge (OC) Chittaranjan Roy of Ruhia police station confirmed the matter to TheReport.live.
