Garment workers in Gazipur blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway this morning, in protest of their wages under new payment structure.
Workers of Zamzam Spinning Mills in Sreepur upazila blocked the highway at Jaina Bazar area from around 7:00am.
An operator of the factory said, "We have approached the factory administration multiple times, asking for salary payment in the new structure, but there has been no response. So, I was forced to protest."
Some protesting workers also claimed that the new salary structure is lower than what they are currently being paid.
Sub-Inspector Pranab Chandra Das, duty-officer of Mawna Highway Police, said police are on the spot and are trying to remove the protesters.
"We are trying to normalise traffic movement," he added.
