Prices of onion, and other daily necessities skyrocket

In recent weeks, prices of kitchen market items have skyrocketed. While no government department is willing to accept their failure in monitoring the markets, kitchen markets in the capital are in absolute pandemonium.

The heaviest burden of these price changes are borne by the middle and working class families. Moreover, situation has become the worst since thousands were laid off amid the pandemic.

On Monday (October 11) Commerce Secretary Tapan Kanti Ghosh told the media that prices of onion will remain high throughout the month due to unstable international markers.

The official added that the ministry has taken initiatives to prevent the prices from inflating further.

"Onion prices have shot up due to the heavy downpours in Bangalore, India. Traders in the neighbouring countries are also responsible for this. According to the agriculture ministry, the situation will take at least a month to stabilise. Until the supply of new onions increases," the commerce secy told media.

He also said that the ministry has requested NBR for withdrawing taxes from onions, as well as other crude items.
