Pre-polls violence kills one, injures at least seven in Jhenidah

A clash between supporters of oppositional chairman candidates in the upcoming Union Parishad (UP) elections in Jhenaidah killed one and injured at least seven others.

The deceased has been identified as Haran Biswas (65).

On Friday (December 31) a clash erupted between the supporters of incumbent UP chairman Mahmudul Hasan Mamun, Awami League backed candidate, and independent candidate Julfikar Tipu at Shailkupa upazil’s Sarutia Union.

The matter was confirmed to the media by local police.

Additional forces have been deployed in the area following the clash, said Shailkupa police Officer In-Charge (OC) Rafiqul Islam.

Following the clash involving sharp weapons, at least eight people were taken to the state-run hospital in Shailkupa town

Among them, 65-year-old Haran Biswas was declared dead on arrival.

Elections to the Sarutia union council are scheduled for January 5.
