Dhaka roads in deserted look on second day of lockdown

Friday, sporadic rain and strict lockdown have left Dhaka city on a deserted look. Very few vehicles were seen moving at different busy roads in the capital. Lanes and by-lanes were found almost vacant.

Several transports were seen plying at Karwan Bazar intersection in the capital since the morning with hardly any private cars.

Freight vehicles were mainly moving in the biggest kitchen market area.

However, law enforcing agencies were seen tougher at various check posts across the city.

Police arrested 550 people in the capital for violating lockdown restrictions on Thursday, the first day of the complete lockdown.

Moreover, 274 vehicles were fined a total of Tk4,63,050 for flouting lockdown rules. Mobile courts also sentenced eight people to jail terms and fined many individuals and businesses for shutdown violations on the same day.

“It is a Friday and it has been raining since the morning, which is why there are fewer vehicles on the streets,” Traffic Inspector (Mohakhali) Asaduzzaman told media.

“We are letting vehicles go only after thorough enquiries at the checkposts," he said, adding: “Cases are being filed against anyone caught stepping out of their homes without a valid reason.”

As many as 6,944 people have died of Covid-19 in last six month across the country. Most of the people died from April to June.

On Thursday (July 1), the country logged the highest 143 single day deaths in coronavirus complications since the pandemic began.

However, the death rate stands at 1.59 per cent in comparison to the reported caseload.
