German fans call for boycott of Qatar World Cup

Numerous protests against the World Cup in Qatar have taken place across Germany‍‍`s professional football leagues, with opposing supporters joining together to condemn FIFA corruption and human rights violations in the Gulf Arab nation.

Before the final Bundesliga game, Freiburg supporters behind one goal held a large banner that said, "Boycott Qatar."

Other huge banners drew attention to alleged injustices in the nation, and it appeared that practically every fan in the stadium‍‍`s 34,700-seat capacity carried a sign asking for a boycott of the tournament five days before it was scheduled to start.

Mainz fans also called for boycott during their team’s draw with Eintracht Frankfurt.

They were the final protests after weeks of public displays across stadiums against the tournament controversially awarded to Qatar by FIFA amid allegations of vote-buying in 2010.

Greuther Fürth coach Alexander Zorniger also boycotting the tournamnet.

“Happy Christmas to you all, happy World Cup, nonsense World Cup,” Zorniger said after his team’s final game of the year on Sunday.
