Present economic scenario an ominous signal for all: Fakhrul

BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said, the decrease in foreign reserve and increase in import expenditure are ominous signals for the country’s economy.

“I think the present scenario of Bangladesh’s economy is alarming. This is an ominous signal for us,” he said.

Mirza Fakhrul was speaking to the media after holding a meeting of the BNP standing committee at the party chairperson’s Gulshan office in the capital on Wednesday.

Fakhrul said, “We (standing committee) doubt that in near future we could fall in danger like Sri Lanka and that doubt can be termed as realistic.”

“Kind of instability and uncertainty have been prevailing in Bangladesh’s economy. Specially, the increase in import cost and deficit in export and remittance flow created a bigger problem in the economic equilibrium of the country. Prices of daily commodities have been soaring due to the depreciation of Bangladesh currency in comparison to the US dollar. The situation seems to be turbulent in coming days,” he furthered.
