Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif ruled out the possibility of BNP chief Khaleda Zia rejoining politics in person as she is a convict.
“Being a leader, she can do politics and there is nothing wrong with that. But when it comes to a convict, the person in question can’t do so until his/her sentence if over,” he said.
He was talking to reporters after attending a book-launching event in Dhaka on Friday.
Hanif said political leaders can do politics even when in jail. “But this is not permissible physically,” he observed.
Khaleda, according to the ruling party leader, can’t even run the next polls race.
“This is because any convict, as per the constitution, with a two-year sentence can only vie for the election five years after the punishment ends,” he argued.
His comments come amid mixed statements from his party colleagues regarding the BNP chairperson returning to politics.
The law and the agriculture ministers say Khaleda can do so, but the information, and the road transport and bridges ministers claim vice versa.
