The 72km Akhaura-Laksam section, where dual-gauge double rail lines were installed as part of a Tk 6,504.54 crore project, was officially opened by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday.
She virtually opened the Dhaka-Chattogram rail link`s portion from the Gono Bhaban, at 11:10 a.m.
As the country`s first rail track to be entirely double-lined, inauguration of this section will significantly improve train connectivity between Dhaka and Chattogram.
The remaining 321 kilometers of the track between the capital and the port city have already undergone the double-line conversion.
After the Akhaura-Laksam section is opened, Bangladesh Railway officials claim that the distance between the two cities will be decreased by an hour.
