Coal-laden ship sinks in Bhairab River in Jashore

A ship named MVPurbaanchal-7, with around 800 metric tonnes of coal, has sunk in the Bhairab River in Jashore‍‍`s Abhaynagar Upazila.

The incident occurred around 3 am on Tuesday in the Bhatpara area of the upazila. The ship, laden with approximately 800 metric tonnes of coal valued at an estimated Tk 1.35 crore.

Captain Mofizur Rahman of MV Purbaanchal-7 from Purbaanchal-7 Shipping Company confirmed the incident on Tuesday. The importing company, JHCM Group from Indonesia, had brought the coal to Nowapara at Abhaynagar.

According to the importing company sources, the large cargo ship, carrying around 800 metric tons of coal from Indonesia, arrived at the Mongla Port‍‍`s Hardboardia on January 6. The MV Purbaanchal-7 carried out the unloading operation and anchored in the Bhatpara area of Abhaynagar on the evening of January 7. After nine days, around 12 am on Tuesday, the ship began to take on water during the tide. By 3 am, it completely submerged.

Jagadish Chandra Mandal, the sales executive of JHCM Group, stated that the process of salvaging the coal is underway.

A general diary (GD) was filed over the matter at the Abhaynagar Police Station.
