Five passengers of a private car died after a segment of a viaduct of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project fell on the vehicle in Dhaka's Uttara area on Monday afternoon.
The deceased are--car’s owner Rubel Mia, 60, his wife Fahima, 40, Fahima’s sister Jharna, 28, and Jharna’s two children, Jannat, 6, and Zakaria, 4. They all hailed from Jamalpur dictrict.
According to family sources, they were returning from a wedding reception. Two other members of the family, a newly married couple, were rescued from the crushed vehicle and sent to the hospital.
The accident occurred around 4pm when a crane carrying the viaduct could not bear its weight and lopsided after losing balance.
Mohammad Mohsin, officer-in-charge of Uttara West Police Station, Confirmed about the incident.
He said: "The bodies were recovered after the girder was removed around 7:15 pm."
