West Bengal Election: Mamata meets kin of Cooch Behar firing victims

People will give verdict for this crime," said West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday as she met the family of those killed in CISF firing in Sitalkuchi, Cooch Behar on April 10, reports India Today.

Reaching Mathabhanga on Wednesday, Mamata lamented that she could not meet the next of kin of the deceased earlier owing to a 72-hour ban on entry of political leaders in Cooch Behar, where four people were gunned down by CISF personnel, who fired in "self-defence", on April 10.

The West Bengal chief minister assured justice to the kin of the victims and said, "The West Bengal government will support all victims of political violence including Sitalkuchi victims' family...Whoever did this

, we will bring them to justice."

In response, the family members of those killed in Sitalkuchi violence said they trust Mamata Banerjee.

"Didi came to meet us here and said that she would help us as soon as the election ends. She consoled and gave us hope. We trust her," the family members said.

Firing in Cooch Behar

Four people were killed as CISF personnel allegedly opened fire after coming under attack from locals who "attempted to snatch their rifles" in West Bengal's Cooch Behar district as the fourth phase of polling in the assembly election was underway on Saturday.

The incident took place at Mathabhanga in Cooch Behar outside the Sitalkuchi polling booth. Police have said as the central troops came under attack by the locals, they opened fire, killing four.

"The clash broke out while the team, along with local police representatives, were clearing the public who were reportedly preventing voters from reaching polling booths. During this, a voter fell down and unidentified miscreants started to damage the vehicle of QRT. Following this, five rounds were fired by the security personnel.

Further matter is being ascertained by the Mathabhanga police under Cooch Behar district," sources had said.
