Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members have handed over bodies of four Indian nationals, who were among those killed by the flash flood triggered by the glacial lake outburst in northeastern state of Sikkim, the Indian defence ministry said today.

The bodies were carried to Bangladesh by the huge surge of water in the trans-border Teesta river following the lake outburst on the night of October 3-4 in north Sikkim.

Theirs were among the 26 bodies recovered from different areas along the river in northern part of West Bengal state, the ministry said in an update on the flood situation, reports our New Delhi correspondent.

A glacial lake outburst in South Lhonak lake caused a devastating flood, swelling the Teesta water level by about 50-60 feet in height, which caused calamitous floods downstream. Large scale damage to infrastructure, property and loss of human lives were reported.

As per the Sikkim government estimate, a total of 142 persons are missing, out of which 26 bodies have been recovered so far. The exact assessment of the damage is yet to be firmed up due to the inclement weather and incessant rains.
