One dead, ten missing in landslide on Italian island

Officials and rescue services reported that a woman was killed and about a dozen other people were still missing on Saturday, after heavy rains caused a landslide on the Italian island of Ischia.

The Gulf of Naples island witnessed severe rain overnight. Early on Saturday morning, a landslide hit the hamlet of Casamicciola Terme, flooding homes and sweeping away many cars.

Matteo Salvini, the deputy prime minister, had initially reported eight deaths. However, as of Saturday night, 10 people are still missing and there had been one confirmed death.

Claudio Palomba, the prefect of Naples, gave a media briefing where he stated that the first victim was a woman whose body was discovered by rescuers.

He claimed that several of the people who had been reported missing earlier had been located safe, including one family with a new infant, but that by mid-afternoon, about 10 more people were still missing.
