After extensive deliberation, the European Union (EU) Parliament has greenlit a proposal aimed at overhauling political asylum regulations.

Outlined in ten statutes, the reforms entail stringent measures at the EU‍‍`s external borders, fostering collective responsibility among member states. This move aims to alleviate the burden on countries like Greece and Italy, traditionally overwhelmed by the influx of refugees. Moreover, the reforms seek to curb the practice of asylum shopping, wherein migrants seek recognition in multiple EU nations exploiting the fragmented asylum policy.

Previously endorsed by the majority of EU member state governments, the initiative is slated for implementation from 2026, pending approval by the European Commission.

Key provisions of the proposal include:

Identity Verification: Migrants entering the EU irregularly will undergo thorough identity checks as per the EU‍‍`s ‍‍`Asylum and Migration Pact‍‍`.

Security Measures: Enhanced security protocols will entail regular health assessments, facial biometric scanning, and fingerprinting of irregular migrants. These procedures may span up to seven days.

Protection for Irregular Migrant Children: Special provisions will be made for irregular migrant children, ensuring they receive adequate care. Member states are mandated to establish independent monitoring systems to safeguard the rights of all irregular migrants.
