Urging all sides to refrain from violence, European Union (EU) High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the European Commission Josep Borrell has expressed concern over the arrest of opposition activists in Bangladesh.

"Concerned by the arrest of over 8,000 opposition activists in Bangladesh. Justice must be served in all cases," he wrote, taking to his social media account - X, formerly known as Twitter.

The EU High Representative encouraged all parties to refrain from violence.

"Vital to find a peaceful way to participatory elections, conducive to democracy, human rights and fundamental freedoms," he said.

Opposition parties led by BNP continue their second phase countrywide blockade marked by stray incidents of violence and relatively fewer vehicles plying inter-district routes.
