US sanctions on RAB likely to be lifted soon: Home Minister

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal has said that the sanctions imposed by the United States (Us) on Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) is likely to be lifted soon. United States assistant secretary of state for South and Central Asian Affairs Donald Lu made such hints.

The Minister said this while talking to the reporters at the Secretariat on Monday.

Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal has said, “They (US) also acknowledged that RAB played an important role in preventing terrorism. However, once the sanctions are imposed, the process of lifting them becomes complicated, Lu said.”

He said Donald Lu has been informed about the US sanctions on RAB officials. RAB has a great role in preventing various types of terrorist activities including militancy, arson, drug smuggling, murder, killing of foreigners in the country.

Regarding the meeting with Donald Lu, Kamal also said that the electoral system of Bangladesh has been presented to the United States, and at the same time it has been informed that everyone will participate in the elections.

Lu said his country wants to see a fair election. At the same time, the US government does not want to see any violence in name of mass rally. America wants to see Bangladesh prosperous, said Home Minister.

The government will not obstruct the peaceful programme of BNP. But action will be taken if they block the road, arson or vandalism, he said.

Meanwhile, Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal had a meeting with Donald Lu at Foreign Service Academy in the capital on Sunday (January 15) afternoon. He briefed media over the meeting in the secretariat on Monday.
