Oil tanker explodes on river killing 1, charring at least seven

One person has been killed in an explosion on a fuel tanker in the Sugandha river in Jhalokathi, while seven others sustained burn injuries.

The ship named Sagar Nandini-3 exploded on the south bank of Padma Oil Company on the banks of Sugandha river at around 8:15 am on Friday (November 12).

Later, a unit of Jhalokati Fire Service went to the spot and brought the fire under control.

The deceased has been identified as Kamruzzaman (45). He was employed as captain of that ship and a resident of Gopalganj.

Seven other crew members of the ship sustained critical burn injuries. The injured were rushed to Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital.

Deputy Commissioner Zohar Ali said the injured were being treated at Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital. However, they will be sent to Dhaka for better treatment. A committee will be formed to investigate the incident.
