Md. Shahabuddin takes oath as 22nd President

Md. Sahabuddin took the oath as the new president. Through his oath, the country got the 22nd President.

The speaker of the National Assembly Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury administered Md. Shahabuddin to take oath as the new president of Bangladesh at around 11 am in Darbar Hall of Bangabhaban.

Secretary of the President, Md. Zainal Abedin said that immediately after taking the oath the new president Md. Sahabuddin and the outgoing president Md. Abdul Hamid officially exchanged the chair.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Chief Justice Hasan Faiz Siddiqui, Government Ministers, State Ministers, Members of Parliament, Chief Election Commissioner, Supreme Court Justices, political leaders, chiefs of the three armed forces, diplomats, editors, senior journalists, and senior civil and military officials were present at the oath-taking ceremony.

The wife of the new president Dr. Rebeka Sultana and son Arshad Adnan Roni along with other family members also attended the event.

On February 13 of this year, Md. Shahabuddin was elected as the 22nd President of Bangladesh. He was born on December 10, 1949, in the city of Pabna. Sahabuddin obtained his MSc degree from Rajshahi University in 1974 and later passed his LLB and BCS (Law) examinations.

During the career of Md. Shahabuddin, he served as District and Session Judge and ACC Commissioner. He also served as the Director of the Prime Minister's Office and the coordinator assigned to the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs in the Bangabandhu assassination case.

Sahabuddin was elected as Secretary General of BCS (Judiciary) Association twice in a row. After retirement from service, he was engaged in legal profession in the High Court.

He later served as the Chairman of the Judicial Inquiry Commission investigating the 2001 post-election violence. As the ACC Commissioner, Md. Sahabuddin showed firmness in dealing with the supposed corruption conspiracy against the Padma Bridge project.
