Jhuman Das granted bail

Jhuman Das who has been captivated for months in a case filed under Digital Security Act (DSA) was granted bail.

A high court bench comprised of justice Mostofa Zaman Islam and justice KM Jahid Sarwar passed the bail order for one year on Thursday (September 23) following a hearing on a plea filed by Jhuman Das.

The court said Jhuman was barred from leaving Sunamganj during this time.

On July 18, a magistrate court rejected Jhuman’s bail plea. Later he filed another appeal with the session judge court which was denied on August 3 followed by another plea with the high court.

The top court conducted hearing over the petition on September 21 and set today to pass the verdict.

Lawers ZI Khan Panna, Nahid Sultana and Ashraf Ali stood before the court on behalf of the defender while assistant attorney general Md.Mizanur Rahman was the prosecution.

Earlier, Jhuman was arrested in a case filed under the DSA following a facebook post regarding controversial Hefazate Islam leader Mamunul Haque.  

Miscreants carried out attack on people of Hindu community in Shalla of Sunamganj on March 17 a day after the post was shared.

Jhuman was produced before the court on the same day while the court ordered to land him on jail.

On March 22, police filed the case under Digital Security Act. Later on March 23, he was shown arrested in the case. He was taken to two days remand on March 30.
