Toddler killed in police firing during Thakurgaon polls violence

A two-year-old child has been killed and several others injured in police firing during the announcement of the result of the Bacho Union Parishad polls at Ranisankail upazila of Thakurgaon, according to Prothom Alo. 

The deceased is Asha, daughter of Md Badsha Mia of Middangi Bazar in the area. 

As the followers  of the defeated candidated opened fire, the policemen posted at the Bhangbari High School centre of the Ward-3 under the union parishad retaliated with gunshots on Wednesday evening.  

The child was on her mother's lap. The woman was there to get update of the polls result.

Upazila Health Complex's Resident Doctor Firoz Alam said 11 people had been admitted after the brawl. 

Presiding Officer Khatibar Rahman also claimed that the supporters of the defeated candidate attacked the police members assigned there.  

Ranisankail police station's OC SM Zahidul Islam said police fired back in self-defence.
