Actor Sohel murder: Tribunal asks police to produce Ashish Roy before it

A tribunal has directed the authorities concerned to produce Ashish Roy Chowdhury aka Botol Chowdhury before it on April 17 in connection with a case filed over the murder of popular film actor Sohel Chowdhury.

Judge Zakir Hossain of Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-2 passed the order on Monday.

Assistant Public prosecutor (APP) of the tribunal Sadia Afrin confirmed the matter to media.

Ashish is the prime accused in Sohel Chowdhury murder case. He is now behind the bars after being arrested in another case recently.

Talking to the repots, Sadia Afrin said: "The production warrant

has been issued to produce him before the court."

A team of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) held Ashish on April 5 from his Gulshan residence in the capital. Later, he was sued under Narcotics Control Act. He was produced before the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) court on April 7 and the court sent him to the jail the same day.

On December 18, 1998, Sohel Chowdhury was shot dead by miscreants at Trumps Club in Abedin Tower, in Dhaka's Banani area.

Following the incident, the victim's brother filed a murder case with Gulshan Police Station.

After investigation, detectives pressed charges against businessman Aziz Muhammad Bhai, Ashish and seven others on July 30, 1999.

It could not be known whether Ashish secured bail in the case as the High Court in 2003 stayed the proceedings of the trial. The stay was withdrawn after 19 years on February 27 this year.
